Interview with Josh Mosqueira
Data publikacji : 18.08.2013

Next week Blizzard Entertainment will be announcing Diablo III expansion during gamescom 2013. We were lucky enough to chat with Game Director, Josh Mosqueira and asked him about console version of the game and its' future.

Q:  If you could change one (or two) things about Diablo III when it was released, what would it be? Considering your experience and knowledge about the game that you have right now.

A:  Truth be told, a lot of what we have been focusing on over the last few months has been directly tied to this question. Now that we have seen the live game evolve over the last year, I believe our focus on the loot game, but also in exploring new and different ways for plays to play the game will open up the experience for players.

Q:  Console version of Diablo III offers some additional features that increase the dynamic of the gameplay (such as evade moves or new inventory management system etc.). Do you think that any of those console-specific features would translate well into PC version?

A:  Great question! I say when people get to try out the game in a few weeks I want to hear from our players what console features they would like to see make its way to PC. Some, like Nephalem Glory could be simple changes we could think about. Others are more complicated and might even be out of the question, like Evade. Personally, I hope we can bring over the Item Queue.

Q:  While some developers would just create a port of their game, you decided to refine it and make it a proper console version. What was a biggest challenge in creating console version of Diablo III?

A:  No making a port :)/> I think it would have been easy as you mention to just port it over, but the fact not just the team, but Blizzard wanted us to make a great console game was at once both liberating and terrifying. So the challenge was finding out what areas to really push and tweak, while others to leave well enough alone. Evade is a prime example. It was a drastic change, one that effects the low level combat mechanics but it was something that just _felt_ right when thinking about a Diablo console game.

Q:  Based on many blue posts on forums in past couple weeks, it seems like we can expect some overhaul and new additions in PC version of Diablo III in the future. Which systems are you planning to refine to make Diablo III more enjoyable? Can you give any examples?

A:  Hang in there a little longer :)/>

Q:  A lot of people have mixed feeling about the auction house and an impact it has on the economy of the game. What's your opinion about the state of the economy in Diablo III on PCs? Any plans for some improvements/changes for this particular area?

A:  This is such a complicated aspect of Diablo III. I think everyone wants a simple answer, like we're doing X and it'll all work out. But it's not that simple. For me, we need to address two primary issues. One, and the biggest issue, is what I call the Temptation factor. It's too easy right now to slip into the AH and buy items. This in itself is not a bad thing, but it's trickey when players feel that is their only avenue to find items. This is what we're trying to directly address with Loot 2.0. On the second issue, the economy one, there we might need to make bigger changes and have more conversations, internally and with you in our community.

Q:  What's your opinion about character diversity in the game? Does skill system implemented in Diablo III serve its' purpose as a major customization feature for characters in game?

A:  What I like about our Skill System is that it gives players a cool toolbox. There should be a role for every skill, a reason for every build and for the most part I think this is working out. We are seeing some common builds for sure, but in the age of wikis and reddit, it is natural for players to gravitate to "one build to rule them all!" but it is not the only way to play. We also hope Paragon 2.0 will shake things up.

Q:  Let's think that in the future there's a problem that some major feature would be an amazing addition to Diablo III on PC but would work rather bad on consoles - can you imagine that that in few years PC and console Diablo games would be two different games in terms of gameplay mechanics?

A:  I hope not. While we will continue to make design decisions for each platform to make the best PC or Console Diablo game, our hope is that the shared DNA stays the same.

Q:  Would you recommend console version of Diablo III to people who already have/play PC version? If so, why?

A:  Absolutely! You really have to play it to understand, but there is something fantastic about playing Diablo III on console with direct control on a big TV and a comfy couch. The feeling of control, the attachment to your character, the little details that jump out all make for a great console experience. Add 3 friends and it's simply fun. Diablo on PC is at its best when you're playing with other people and being able to do that in a shared location is fun. Thanks!
